How to Descale a Noritz Heater


Thing I thought it’d take a second or  two here and discuss some of the  reasoning behind these scaling and why  we need to do it who needs to do it and  when and so on the answer to those  questions are varying depending on what  part of the country you live in and so  on how your water quality is our company  is in the Seattle area and we have some  of the best water quality and  all united states in our case descaling  about every three years for those folks.

Who are on a city water supply every  three years is adequate in some cases  the water heater will start  malfunctioning and it will stop running  properly  maybe shutting itself down or  fluctuating water temperatures that can  be an indication that the scale is  building up on the interior pipe way  through the heat exchanger and so and so  on if you have poor quality water or if  you’re on a well system you might need  to descale you know even in the Seattle  area more frequently than every three  years and and that’s the point I’m  trying to make depending on where you  live that will dictate as to how often  you need to do this and and what type of  solution you need to use I mentioned  earlier CLR and I know that’s a very  powerful it’s a calcium lime and rust  therefore CLR product that dissolves  those minerals and so on and if we lived  in an area where water quality was  extremely poor I might I might tend to  use that product we don’t need to use it  here if I were going to use a product  like that I would certainly take  additional precautions to flush the  water heater after after use because  it’s a toxic subject substance so that’s  why I personally don’t like it.

But as I  mentioned it it might be necessary in  areas where the vinegar might not touch  some of the scaling problems you might  see in other parts of the country why do  we need to descale well it’s like it’s  like the old coffeepot trick you know  you probably used to pour a little  vinegar in at every few months to get  that scale off the interior of the  coffee pot the same thing goes for the  tankless and what’s happening is as we  heat water the molecule of the water  breaks open enough to where the solid  particles will fall out of the water  stream and collect whatever they can  collect on it if you have a tank style  heater  these deposits form in the bottom of  your tank and that’s what we call  sediment in a tankless since it’s  flushing it you know constantly there’s  really no water being stored those  deposits will collect on the interior  pipe way of the water heater and and you  know then they collect onto each other  and so on and so that’s why it’s  important to dissolve those particles  and flush them through a flush them out  of there to keep your system running in  top order and to prolong the life of the  heat exchanger.

If it builds up too much  you know the water the heat can’t  transfer through the system the sensors  can’t tell what’s going on it can’t keep  a steady temperature and so on so it is  an important function of tankless water  heater ownership and really about the  only preventative maintenance thing  other than common-sense issues but the  only preventive maintenance tasks that  you have in the tankless system is the  occasional descaling  okay it’s been about an hour now you can  see the water is turning a nice darker  color blue and we’re just about finished  here then go ahead and unplug the pump  and then what we’ll do is we will close  the inlet port handle and remove the  hose from the inlet and it’ll just kind  of drain back down into the bucket now  in this case you can go ahead and  reattach the little cap and just make  sure like I said that the washer is in  there good like like with the hose and  tight is all you need on that the valve  itself keeps everything off but this is  a safety device in case a child or some  books were to come along and open the  valve up and it I’m going to get blasted  in the face so that’s really all it’s  for keep the bugs out and so on and now.

What we’ll do is drain this bucket of  solution down the drain or out in the  and down down the storm sewer or  whatever to a safe location  okay emptied my bucket and as you can  see I put the end of the drain or the  return line just into one of my empty  with vinegar bottles while I was out  draining the bucket I take that return  line now and put it down here into the  bottom of the bucket we’ve got to flush  the heater out and I suppose you could  just open a tap in the house a hot water  tap and let the water flow and flush  there but again the manufacturer’s  instructions for this particular model  asks you to just do it into the bucket  they want you to run 20 gallons through  so we’re going to fill this bucket up  you know four times and you know dump it  out outside you could also hook a garden  along garden hose up at this point up  here to the to the outlet and run it  outside but just to keep things simple.

We’re just going to do it with the  bucket here and so we’ll go ahead and  and we’ve got that secured in there now  this is the wing valve as they talked  about we’re just going to crack it open  a little bit because if you opened it  wide open this hose would be flailing  around like a like a snake  anyway we’re just going to flush it open  it up as much as you can to keep it  under control and flush that Eater out  with fresh cold water coming from this  water supply so I’m going to do that  four times and then we’ll go from there  one additional step that we need to do  with this particular model of heaters we  have to bleed this little there’s a  little drain port under the heater it’s  just to the left of the gas Inlet  witches over here with the yellow  flexible line this little black port  here is just finger tight up in there  has a low ring on it with the fresh  water inlet on we’re going to hold a  little bucket underneath this device and  unscrew it about two or three turns.

You  don’t want to take it all the way out  just enough to get some water to flow  through it and let it flush for about  ten seconds into your bucket and then  tighten it back up  okay we’ve drained water out the little  black port we’ve got it back closed now  and now the next step is to clean the  inlet filter on the on the machine this  valve body here on the inlet houses a  Inlet screen filter that’s attached to  this little thumb screw on the end and  the first thing you want to do at this  point is turn the water back off Inlet  cold water is off and let’s relieve the  pressure again off the system with the  relief valve trip lever we’ll flip the  handle out and just balance it like like  it is you’ll hear water draining out the  line or you’ll see it draining out of  that if that isn’t pipe to the exterior  like it is here but we know the water is  off now trust me if you don’t get the  water off and you try to take this out  you’re going to have a colossal mess so  make sure the waters off relieve the  pressure then go ahead it’s just finger  tight we’re going to unscrew this thumb  screw and pull out the filter now down  below here I have strategically placed  my little bucket.

If I weren’t filming  I’d be holding the bucket right here  underneath me of course and catch the  water that’s going to come dribbling out  so just don’t screw it until it comes  out pull it out  and you’ll see that our inlet filter is  attached to the thumbscrew in this case  it’s really clear I was really no  sediment or anything and I see a few  little flecks in there that I’m going to  I’m going to clean out as soon as I put  the camera down we’ll go ahead and clean  that well and put it right back in  there’s no seals there is a little  o-ring here right around the rim and you  want to make sure that that’s intact  because without it you’re sunk so we put  that back in and do do your best not to  cross that it really goes in very easy  if you just try to you know don’t try to  force anything it screws right in very  easy and you know.

It’s just finger tight  when it hits the end so I’ll take it  back out and we’ll clean it then I’ll  put it back in and we’ll proceed to the  next step okay it’s back in good and  tight we’ll go ahead and close the  relief valve now next we’ll reset the  controller by simply turning it off  letting it sit for about 10 seconds and  then turn it back on letting it sit for  10 seconds or so let’s the diodes inside  dissipate and let’s it completely reset  if your unit didn’t have a controller on  it you can simply unplug the water  heater from its power source and leave  it unplugged for 10 seconds and that  will accomplish the same thing we’ve got  everything pretty much ready to go here  make some hot water the last thing that  we need to do is we need to go back to  the gas supply and turn it back to the  on position in line is on crossways is  off so we’re back on with the gas come  over here and open or open the hot out  main control.
